Our Story
Founded in 2007, by four once poor and needy women, VHC-GCC provides basic care and nurturance, as well as vocational opportunities to over 250 orphaned, abandoned, exploited young women and girls who live in the Kampala area of Uganda.
The organization started as a Community Based Organization (CBO) registered with the District Council of Luweero. Responding to an assessment in local communities in the Kampala area that revealed the agony and catastrophes girl–children experience in their stages of growth and development, we took action.
For our first project we partnered with a group of Bay Area physicians from the organization PINCC (Prevention International No Cervical Cancer) who provided cervical cancer screening for individuals and training for health professionals at rural hospitals. in Luweero. The screenings expanded to include additional districts.
In 2009, VHC-GCC purchased land 28 miles outside of Kampala and built a home to accommodate needy girls in the immediate area. We currently have 21 girls living at the house.
We expanded our efforts to help young women (13-25 years of age) explore and recognize their potential through education and vocational skills development, career guidance, counseling, and spiritual support. In 2015, we launched a Tailoring program, with resources obtained from a UK-based non-profit organization called Tools with a Mission. In 2016, we began a Hairdressing program and in 2017,expanded our vocational training to include Auto Mechanics, Plumbing, Electrical Installation, and Computer Science.
